Senior SRE / DevOps Engineer (Contract)

Our client is looking for a highly experienced Senior SRE / DevOps Engineer to build, operate, and industrialise modern cloud native platforms across both public and private cloud environments.

Duration: 5-6 months initially
Pay Rate: Competitive
IR35 Status: Inside (PLEASE NOTE: Employer NI is paid for by the client)
Location: Remote with occasional travel to Hatfield

Clearance: Banking clearance required

The Role:
You will design, build, and run secure, reliable, and fully automated platform services used by major customers undergoing digital transformation. This role is hands on and highly technical, with a focus on industrialising platform operations, enforcing governance, and delivering repeatable, automated infrastructure patterns across GCP and private cloud environments.

Main Responsibilities:

Platform Engineering & Operations:

• Build, operate, and evolve lab and production platforms across GCP (GKE, GKE On-Prem, GDC).
• Manage Kubernetes clusters at scale — including cluster lifecycle, upgrades, drift remediation, and Day 0/1/2 automation.
• Implement GitOps-first operations using ArgoCD.
• Enforce platform policies, configuration baselines, and compliance evidence collection.

Automation & Infrastructure as Code:
Engineer consistent public/private cloud infrastructure using:

• Terraform Enterprise.
• Ansible Automation Platform.
• Metalsoft.
• Develop and manage multi stage CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and TFE.
• Industrialise reusable Golden Path modules and templated stacks.

Security, Zero Trust & Secrets Management:

• Embed zero trust principles (MFA, IAP, HA VPN, IP allow listing) across pipelines and runtime.
• Implement enterprise grade secrets lifecycle management using Akeyless.
• Integrate compliance controls, CI policy gates, and audit trails supporting DORA.

Customer Delivery & Technical Leadership:

• Lead customers through platform modernisation and DevOps transformation initiatives.
• Produce automation frameworks, reference architectures, and runbooks.
• Run workshops and ensure a smooth handover to support and operations teams.

Required Skills & Experience:

Expert Level:

• CI/CD & IaC Automation (GitHub Actions, Terraform Enterprise, Ansible Automation Platform).
• Cluster lifecycle management & GitOps operations.
• TFE workspace/module design across VCF & GCP.
• Secrets lifecycle management (Akeyless, vault patterns).
• Multi stage app + infra pipelines.
• Reusable modules & Golden Path stacks.

Practitioner Level:

• Kubernetes operations, patch automation, drift remediation.
• Secret rotation automation & compliance evidence collection.
• Metalsoft for bare metal IaC.
• Network/perimeter controls (IAP, HA VPN, MFA, IP allow listing).
• Policy checks, CI gating, and AAP based patching/hardening.
• Cost aware provisioning.
